New ‘75’ Plates: Number Plates Explained

From 1st September 2025, the new 75-plate will arrive on UK roads, the second number plate change of the year and a key moment for both drivers and dealerships. Number plates in the UK are refreshed twice a year, in March and September, helping to clearly indicate a vehicle’s age and often sparking increased interest in new cars. These updates align with new model releases, seasonal promotions, and make it easier for buyers to plan their purchases.

How Do Number Plates Work?

UK number plates identify, register, and tax vehicles. Their format consists of:

  1. Two letters showing the region where the car was registered.

  2. Two numbers indicating the year and half-year of registration (March or September).

  3. Three random letters to make each plate unique.

For example:

  • A 25 plate means the car was registered between 1st March – 30th August 2025.

  • A 75 plate means registration runs from 1st September 2025 – 28th/29th February 2026.

This system helps buyers quickly estimate a car’s age and often influences when they choose to make a purchase.

Benefits of a 75 Plate

Buying a 75 plate means your car carries the newest registration, helping to maintain future resale value. You also gain access to the latest 2025/26 models, with the newest technology, styling, and performance features.

Alternatively, snapping up a 25 plate or older vehicle in August can be a smart financial move. Many dealerships, including Harwoods, offer discounts and exclusive deals ahead of the September rush, perfect if you’re looking for a bargain.

The Used Car Market

The release of 75-plate cars affects the used car market, creating a wider selection of nearly-new vehicles. These cars often come at more competitive prices, with a significant portion of their depreciation already absorbed.

However, some may be out of manufacturer warranty. In these cases, an extended warranty can provide peace of mind, protecting you from unexpected repair costs and helping you enjoy worry-free motoring.

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Changes

If you’re planning a new car purchase around the September plate change, it’s worth being aware of the VED updates that came into effect on 1st April 2025:

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs): New EVs registered from April now pay £10 in the first year, followed by £195 annually. EVs registered between April 2017 and March 2025 now also pay £195, while older models (pre-2017) pay £20.

  • Expensive Car Supplement: Vehicles with a list price over £40,000, including EVs, pay an extra £410 per year.

  • Petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars: Higher first-year VED for higher-emission models, with some rates doubling.

These changes mean that the 75-plate release is more than just a new registration, it’s a strategic moment in the automotive calendar, aligning with seasonal buying trends, manufacturer incentives, and tax updates.

Before buying, check for remaining EV incentives, employer car schemes, or business tax benefits. Understanding the full context ensures your 75-plate purchase is well-informed and future-proof.
