A Legacy of Protection: Volvo Marks 70 Years of Seatbelt Innovation
Volvo Cars UK is celebrating seven decades of pioneering seatbelt technology this year, a milestone that coincides with the debut of a world-first, the multi-adaptive seatbelt featured in the new, all-electric EX60.
From Prototype to Global Standard
Volvo’s safety journey reached a pivotal moment 70 years ago when it introduced seatbelts to the European market via the 1956 Amazon prototype. Initially a two-point cross-chest diagonal belt offered as an optional extra, the technology evolved rapidly. By 1959, Volvo became the first manufacturer globally to fit three-point belts as standard.
This design, created by engineer Nils Bohlin, featured the lap and diagonal configuration we still use today. In a move that defined the brand’s commitment to human safety over profit, Volvo shared the patent for free with all car makers. This decision is credited with accelerating the widespread use of seatbelts and saving millions of lives worldwide.
The Multi-Adaptive Seatbelt
The engineering spirit of 1956 lives on in the newly launched EX60 mid-size SUV. This model introduces a multi-adaptive safety belt that uses real-time data from interior and exterior sensors to tailor its response to the individual.
This state-of-the-art system adjusts based on the occupant's height, weight, and seating position, as well as the specific nature of the collision. For instance, a larger passenger in a high-impact crash receives a higher belt load to mitigate head injury, while a smaller occupant in a minor collision receives a lower load to protect against rib fractures.
A Century of Volvo
This anniversary arrives as the brand prepares to celebrate its UK centenary in 2027. Reflecting on this heritage of innovation, Nicole Melillo Shaw, Managing Director of Volvo Car UK, said:
"Volvo has always been at the forefront of safety evolution and innovation, and we’re pleased that we can continue to make new developments on such vital features like the seatbelt. The latest multi-adaptive seatbelt in the new EX60 is a testament to our pioneering technology and approach to safety that is continued today."
