The Story of Volvo: Celebrating 97 Years

  • Volvo

Volvo started making cars in 1927 because they believed nobody else was making them strong enough or safe enough for Swedish roads. The 14th April marks 97 years of Volvo. So, we wanted to take a look at the story of Volvo's humble beginnings.

Transforming from Modest Origins to a Global Titan: The Volvo Saga

Volvo's journey began in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden, when their first factory opened, marking the introduction of the inaugural Volvo car. Today, Volvo Group stands as a global leader committed to creating exceptional products that enhance people's lives.

A Pioneering Culture of Collaboration

From its beginning, Volvo was molded by the visionary principles of its founders, Assar Gabrielsson, a skilled salesman, and Gustaf Larsson, a proficient engineer, who promoted open communication and collaborative partnership. This commitment to teamwork continues to define Volvo's core values. Their sharp business acumen quickly paid off, with Volvo turning a profit within just three years and expanding into the domains of trucks and buses.

Strategic Alliances and Corporate Mergers

The ethos of Volvo has always embraced robust partnerships. A salient instance is the acquisition of Pentaverken, now known as Volvo Penta, a crucial supplier of engines to this day. Another landmark acquisition was Bolinder-Munktell, a pivotal move that laid the groundwork for Volvo Construction Equipment.

Global Ascendance and Broadening Horizons

The ascendancy of Volvo precipitated exponential spikes in sales and production over the course of the 20th century. They expanded their manufacturing footprint, spanning across Europe, North America, and eventually penetrating into Asia and Oceania. Presently, Volvo caters to clientele across more than 190 markets worldwide.

Emphasis on Efficiency and Environmental Responsibility

Approaching the turn of the millennium, Volvo strategically divested Volvo Cars to sharpen its focus on the commercial vehicle sector. Subsequently, they consolidated their position in the logistics industry through significant acquisitions such as Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks.

Volvo spearheads the charge in sustainable transportation solutions. Actively engaging in collaborative ventures like Milence (dedicated to charging infrastructure) and cellcentric (pioneering hydrogen fuel cells), Volvo relentlessly pursues cleaner and more effective technologies for the future.
