When it comes to the world of SUVs, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are two of the most desirable models available. Known for reliability, off-roading performance and luxury, both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport promise durability and top quality performance. But what are the differences between the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport? Let's take a look and compare.

What is the difference between Range Rover and Range Rover Sport?

The differences between the two models are quite subtle. Firstly, the Range Rover has a longer body than the Range Rover Sport, providing more legroom for the rear passengers. The extended wheelbase on the Range Rover boasts an extra 10.2 inches more legroom while also having a slightly larger boot capacity, providing overall more luggage space. The Range Rover Sport is also available with an optional third row, adding another 2 seats to the cabin to create a stylish 7-seater. In 2022, the third row option for the Range Rover is now available due to a design change not previously implemented on pre-2022 models.

All Range Rover SUVs come standard with exclusive Land Rover 4×4 technology. The Range Rover Sport models come with Terrain Response Four-Wheel Drive, which is traditionally driver-activated, providing continuous power while the 4x4 is engaged. The Range Rover on the other hand features a Permanent All-Wheel Drive System, which is smarter and more responsive. That being said, the Range Rover Sport doesn’t lose its off-roading capabilities, Traction Control, Hill Descent Control, and Terrain Response are all elements which make up both models unbeatable all-terrain driving experience.

What is the interior like for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport?

Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are kitted out with the luxurious full leather interior, piercing Xenon headlights, as well as features including Climate Control, Parking Sensors, Rain-Sensing Wipers and a smart entertainment system in the centre console with DAB Radio and Satellite-Navigation. Perhaps the biggest difference in the front cabin is that the Range Rover Sport features a conventional gear stick, while the Range Rover displays a ring rotary style gear selector. Additional options and add-ons are available across both models, as well as various personalisation options.

What is the technology like for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport?

Each Range Rover comes with cutting-edge technology as standard, to enhance the driving experience and all-round safety onboard. Some of the technology featured in both models include:

  • Smartphone Integration (Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto)

  • Pivi Pro Infotainment System

  • Meridian Sound System

  • Voice Recognition

  • Steering Wheel Controls

What is it like to drive the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport?

Both models offer a smooth, capable and powerful drive. Although all models use the same eight-speed automatic gearbox, while comparing base trim levels, the Range Rover is slightly more powerful with its 395 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque from its standard MHEV i6 powertrain. Nevertheless, the Range Rover Sport trails just slightly behind with a total of 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from its similar MHEV i6 engine.

The performance for both models is very similar, although there is a slight difference in handling which comes down to the slightly different sizes of the 4x4s. The Range Rover Sport offers a more agile response due to the lower curb weight. Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport also boast an impressive towing limit of 3500kg, very appealing to the off-roading adventurers and Land Rover enthusiasts.

Due to the size, capacity and performance, both luxury 4x4s are perfect for family life, road trips and adventuring. They are the ultimate ‘go anywhere’ type of vehicle, capable of harsh weather conditions and adapting to suit different kinds of roads and terrains. The iconic Land Rover heritage influences the style and essence of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, while innovation, technology and forward thinking propels the SUVs into modern times, keeping up with modern lifestyles.
