The Dawn of a New Era: The First-Ever Audi RS 5 Plug-in Hybrid
Audi Sport has officially broken the mould with the unveiling of the new RS 5, the division’s first-ever high-performance plug-in hybrid. By blending legendary RS DNA with cutting-edge electrification, Audi has created a machine that transitions seamlessly from a silent city cruiser to a track-ready beast. This model masters every situation with agility, serving as both a comfortable everyday companion and a potent performer.
At the heart of this powerhouse is a modular electrified powertrain that pairs a refined 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 with a 130 kW electric motor. The real magic, however, lies in the completely new quattro drivetrain with Dynamic Torque Control. In a world-first for production cars, this electromechanical torque vectoring system recalculates the optimal power distribution between the rear wheels every five milliseconds. This invisible maestro ensures the car remains exceptionally composed, managing both longitudinal and transverse torque with incredible precision.
The RS 5 doesn’t just perform, it looks the part. Standing roughly 9cm wider than the standard A5, it features flared fenders and a muscular stance. The front is dominated by a three-dimensional Singleframe honeycomb grille and functional Air Curtains, while the rear boasts an aerodynamic diffuser and signature matte oval RS tailpipes. Even the darkened Matrix LED headlights contribute to the purposeful aesthetic with a digital checkered-flag daytime-running-light signature.
To handle the immense power, Audi equipped the RS 5 with bespoke sport suspension featuring innovative twin-valve shock absorbers. This technology allows the car to offer a plush, comfortable ride for highway marathons while virtually eliminating pitch and roll during spirited driving. The chassis is further enhanced by RS-tuned steering and a choice of 20-inch or 21-inch wheels shod in specifically tailored tyres, backed by either powerful steel or ceramic brakes.
For those seeking the pinnacle of sportiness, the optional Audi Sport package adds exclusive elements like bespoke bumpers and two-tone diamond-cut 21-inch wheels. This package also raises the top speed to 285 km/h and introduces a unique interior featuring Serpentine green and brass contrast stitching. Drivers can even utilise the new Audi driving experience function on the 14.5-inch MMI display to analyse route data, track sector times, and monitor drift angles when using the "RS torque rear" mode.
